Utah WIC Program

The Utah Women, Infants, and Children program, "is a nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers, and young children eat well, learn about nutrition, and stay healthy. Nutrition education and counseling, nutritious foods, and help accessing health care are provided to low-income women, infants, and children through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program, popularly known as WIC." - according to their website.

Eligibility Requirements

Buy at Art.com The WIC program supplies supplemental food to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under the age of 5. In order to qualify you must live in Utah, provide valid identification, and meet certain income requirements. To see a list of the income guidelines for your family size visit the WIC website.

If you meet all of the eligibility requirements contact your local office to make an appointment. They will give you a list of all the materials you will need to bring to your first appointment. Be sure and bring all children that you plan on including on the WIC program. They will have to be present at the appointment in order to qualify.

What Food Does WIC Provide?

WIC provides supplemental food to help your child to grow and thrive. Preschoolers will receive milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, peanut butter, beans, and juice. This program will not provide a complete diet for your preschooler but it will provide many of the basic foods that will keep your child healthy.

What Happens at a WIC appointment?

After being approved for the WIC program you must attend appointments every three months. Your preschooler will be weighed and measured to make sure that they are growing the way that they are supposed to. Their iron levels will be checked and you will receive some great tips on nutrition for your preschooler.

Schedule your appointment at a time when the office is likely to be less crowded. Appointments that are first thing in the morning will generally have a shorter waiting time and the office will not be as hectic. There are toys in the waiting room and exam rooms for your preschooler to play with. This is a great way for your preschooler to stay occupied but if the office is crowded it is easy for preschoolers to become frustrated with each other and get angry.
