Sundance Ski Resort for Preschoolers

Sundance Ski Resort is one that is often overlooked by local Salt Lake City parents of preschoolers. This resort is much lower in altitude than many of the other resorts in the area but it is easily accessible for parents of preschoolers living in Utah County and the surrounding areas and is often cheaper than other resorts. This beautiful resort offers all the mountain views of resorts at higher elevations and the roads are generally clear and easy to navigate during the winter.

Bunny Hill for Beginners

Great bunny hill. Preschoolers have the coordination to learn how to ski or snowboard and generally pick up the needed skills quickly. The benefit of being short is you don’t have too far to fall so most preschoolers have less fear and bounce back faster from a fall than adults do. Sundance Ski Resort has an area set aside just for beginners. The bunny hill is located just to the side of the main slope and is a long, gently sloping area that is perfect for preschoolers to have their first experience on skis or a snowboard.

The tow rope makes it easy. Instead of a ski lift, which may frighten some preschoolers and their parents, there is a tow rope with plastic handles that you can hold on to and pull yourself to the top of the small slope. It may be difficult for preschoolers to hold onto the tow rope and pull their entire weight to the top of the hill. It is fairly easy for parents who are moderate skiers to stand with their preschooler in front of them and help their preschooler pull themselves to the top of the hill. Using this method, the preschooler can still hold onto the tow rope and practice getting to the top but they do not have to pull their entire weight.

Difficult location. The bunny hill is perfect for preschoolers learning to ski or snowboard, but it does have an unfortunate placement. In order to get to the bunny hill you not only have to walk to the far side of the resort, but you also have to hike up a fairly substantial hill with your gear and a preschooler who will likely want you to carry them and their gear as well. Sundance does partially make up for this placement by not charging for the use of the bunny hill. As long as you do not want to use the ski lift to do some skiing on your own, you can ski with your preschooler for FREE.

Access to Facilities

Bring your own water. Sundance Resort offers a small lodge with some food services, a water fountain, and a restroom. Because of the difficulty of getting up to the bunny hill, it is quite a hike to get back down to the lodge. I would recommend bringing some bottled water to the bunny hill with you and your preschooler. There are snow drifts on the side of the small hill where you can safely leave your things while you ski. Since the hill is for beginners, you have the ability to see your belongings from anywhere on the bunny hill.

Restrooms are far away. Preschoolers that are potty trained may have trouble making it all the way back to the lodge once they decide that it is time to go to the bathroom. Parents that are seasoned on the slope may be able to ski down with their preschooler but even after that you must go down a flight of stairs to get to the restroom. Even though my son is potty trained, I put him in a diaper for the day because of the difficulty of accessing the restrooms.

Sundance Ski Lessons for Preschoolers

Sundance offers small group lessons. Sundance Ski Resort does not offer lessons until preschoolers are at least four years old. This is quite a bit older than the requirements for other resorts. Their “Wild Bunch” specialty group accepts preschoolers ages 4-5 and limits lessons to two preschoolers. The cost is $75 for the day. Registration for ski lessons must be done by 9:45 a.m. or 1:15 p.m. You can call (801) 223-4140 for registration and additional information.
